Montreal, May 28, 2020 – perte de signal is proud to present its new invited member, Lucas Paris, from the 2017 edition of the Projet Émergent.
Lucas Paris has been working with realtime sound and visuals and has been building digital instruments and software for more then ten years. His research, applied to audiovisual performances, focuses on engaging the audience with content and scenography that are multi-sensory, immersive and emotional. Finding new forms of digital performance is at the core of his artistic approach. The artist sees synthesis, in it’s many forms, as his medium, and cultivates his relationship to it through design, interaction and improvisation.
His projects have been touring internationally since 2017. He performed at several MUTEKs (Spain 2018, Montreal 2017/2016, and Mexico 2017), LEV 2019, Mapping Festival 2018, B39 (Korea), Mirage Festival 2018, Stereolux 2017, and Akousma 2016. He has been in residence at Eastern Bloc, Perte de Signal, Concordia University’s Milieux Institute, VYV corporation, Recto-Verso Québec, Gnration (PT) and Laboral Centro de Arte (ES). He studied digital music and digital instrument making at Université de Montréal.

Within the Projet Émergent, he developed comprsd-ads which was presented in 2019 at the rustines_lab on the occasion of the open lab “Transposition”, and at Lab30, a digital and analog arts festival in Bavaria.

comprsd-ads is a sculpture of kinetic light, a structure that opens and closes on itself. LED panels, in movement, used worldwide as a support for ads, face each other creating an absurd situation where we are no longer the main onlookers. The light reflects itself, publicity addresses publicity. The use of LED screens as elements to modulate the architecture of the exhibition or performance space is a recurring theme of the artist’s work.

These modulated spaces create an oscillation between interior and exterior, introversion and extraversion. The visual content modulating these spaces is synthesized by realtime digital modular networks. The artist sees synthesis, in it’s many forms, as his medium, and cultivates his relationship to it through design, interaction and improvisation. Here engineer of the absurd, Lucas Paris looks to express a perceptual suffocation in a saturation of air, volume and minds by advertising and marketing while aesthetics of industrial design in the installation’s detailed sculptural elements echo a certain fetishization of machinerie, engineering and technology.

perte de signal is a Montreal artist centre that provides access to digital networks. It encourages research and creation, and it promotes both independent artists working in digital arts, and artistic approaches linked with technology. perte-de-signal.org
