Nicolas Bernier, frequencies (light quanta)

Nicolas Bernier. frequencies (light quanta)

Montréal, le 4 septembre 2014 – frequencies (light quanta) is the latest audio-visual installation by Montreal sound artist Nicolas Bernier developed during his residency at the Sound Lab at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and coproduced by PERTE DE SIGNAL in August 2014.

Putting forward his growing fascination towards science, light and basic sound generation process, the artist is here pursuing his research by focusing on the quantum — the smallest measurable value of energy. The whole project is based on the possible conceptual relationships between basic quantum physics principles applied to the audio-visual creative process: particles, probabilities, wave/particle duality and discontinuity. Structured around these notions, the audio-visual composition stems from 100 sound and light fragments that develop themselves aleatorically, generating an ever expending but yet disruptive form in time and space.

frequencies (light quanta) is a poetic reading of those machines and electronic circuits that bring a better understanding and visualization of the infinitesimal world. In this structure, 100 acrylic sheets are mounted on a black monolith. Each acrylic is engraved with graphic forms made of lines and dots, which create a moving animation when the acrylics are lighted up. This physical apparatus allows a singular multidimensional visualization of the sound enabling the creation of audio-visual patterns.

Nicolas Bernier (Ottawa, Canada, 1977) creates sound performances, installations, musique concrète, live electronic music, post-rock, acoustic improvisation and video art. At the same time he works with dance, drama, moving images and interdisciplinary contexts. In the midst of this eclecticism, his artistic endeavours remain constant: the balance between the cerebral and the sensual, and between the sources of organic sound and digital processing.

His works have been of interest for Prix Ars Electronica (Austria),  Sónar (Spain), Mutek (Canada), DotMov Festival (Japan) and Transmediale (Germany) and have been published on lovely labels like Crónica (Portugal), Farmacia901 (Italy), leerraum (Switzerland) and LINE (USA).

He holds a PhD in sonic arts at the University of Huddersfield (UK) and he is currently teaching in the Digital Music program at the Université de Montréal. He is a member and administrator of PERTE DE SIGNAL.
