From November 13 to 16, 2014, PERTE DE SIGNAL presents a Quebec video art component at Contemporary Istanbul, the largest Turkish art fair, in collaboration with Kurye Video. As part of the CONFLUENCE exhibition, the artists will participate in Plugin, the section dedicated to showcasing new media. This project is a showcase of Quebec’s creativity in video art on the international art market.
CONFLUENCE gathers video artworks by six PERTE DE SIGNAL artists: Jason Arsenault, Myriam Bessette, Robin Dupuis, François Quévillon, Nelly-Ève Rajotte and Pavitra Wickramasinghe. Each in its way, these works invest the characteristic spatial plasticity of digital video, a space in which the flows of edited and “processed” moving images and audio modulations wind about, interact and pull at one another. The video support serves as binder to highlight a variety of video practices from animation to static capture of shot sequence and the use of concrete and synthesized sounds.
Whether on the verge of abstraction or hinting at figuration, these works play in various ways with the spectator’s expectation and response. Flickerings, slowness, subtle and marked modulations, signal fluctuations, play on depths of field and spatializations are among the various processes that are used by the artists to touch audience in many different ways. But while the process of making images and sounds governed much of the aesthetic of the works presented, their subjects go well beyond the mere display of particular techniques. At work in the (im)materiality of digital signals is a sensory quest for meaning that transcends the medium’s self-referentiality and invests the field of imagination.
